Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili has flights from places such as Bali, Darwin and Singapore. There are also land border crossings with Indonesian West Timor, including Batugade on the main coastal road.
Best time to visit: May–Nov – dry season, best for diving and hiking.

- Dive or snorkel off Atauro. Float above walls of coral teeming with fish in waters that rank among the most species-rich reefs ever surveyed.
- Climb Mount Ramelau at dawn. Hike the country's highest peak in the dark to watch the sun rise over a sea of clouds.
- Visit Cristo Rei. Walk the steps to the giant Christ statue east of Dili for views over turquoise bays.
- Relax on Jaco Island. Take a fishing boat to this sacred, uninhabited island with blinding white sand at the country's eastern tip.
- Learn at the Resistance Museum. Understand the long fight for independence through photos, documents and personal stories in Dili.
- Watch whales migrate. Look out for blue whales and dolphins passing through the deep strait off Dili, especially from October to December.
- Shop for tais. Browse handwoven traditional textiles in Dili's tais market, each pattern tied to a region.
- Tour coffee country. Visit smallholder plantations in the cool hills of Ermera and taste some of the region's finest organic coffee.
